EL PIT
El PIT is a deep, rugged gash in the jungle floor just 3 km past Dos Ojos. The entrance is steep and narrow, so use caution and use the pulleys to lower heavy equipment if necessary.
Arrive early for a deep morning dive with best light penetration in winter or arrive mid-day in summer for 35m light entry. Once in the water, stop and appreciate the calm around you, descend in the middle of the cenote in full light through a shallow halocline 50ft (14m) towards the hydrogen sulphide cloud at 100ft (30m). Tree branches eerily stick out of a multi-deep cloud of smoke, what appears to be the cavern floor becomes visible, but it do not stop there! El Pit continues deep under the cloud and narrows in darkness to 400ft (120m).
Continue your dive above the cloud as you explore the cavern overhang that leads you to the entrance through which first explorers discovered the cenote. Here you will not only find stalactites of all shapes and sizes, but also a spectacular view of the vastness of this subterranean wonder.
