CASA CENOTE

CASA CENOTE connects the longest underwater cave system in the world, Sac Actun, to the ocean. It is one of the few surface rivers in the Yucatan Peninsula. Located 10 km north of Tulum and 50 km south of Playa del Carmen, Casa Cenote gives the diver the feeling of diving under the mangroves. The dive follows the course of the river to a depth not exceeding 25ft (8m). Due to the connection with the ocean, both freshwater and saltwater fish live here.

The dive follows alongside the mangrove where we observe the mangroves filtering the brackish water. Huge rocks overgrown with mosses and green algae decorate the bottom. As you surface quietly at the end of the river, you may spot different species of birds including the Osprey, known as the Fish Eagle, and with luck a Moreletii also known as the “Mexican Crocodile”.

On the way back, a breadcrumb allows you to explore under the mangrove with spectacular light effects that freeze this intact beauty.

CHIKIN HA

Located about 25 km from Playa del Carmen, the cenote CHIKIN HA (“water from the West” in Mayan) is well appointed with sanitary facilities and a path leading to the entrance of the cenote under a lush jungle. During the dive, you will head to the nearby Rainbow Cenote.

Upon reaching a depth of around 33ft (10m), strange visual effects can be observed as salt and fresh water begin to mix: the Halocline. Descend a few meters into the salt water and experience a comfortable temperature change as salt water is warmer than fresh water.

Upon surfacing at Cenote Rainbow, you will find yourself deep in the jungle, as the roots of many plants grow through the rock and reach to the surface of the water. Always keep an eye on the entrance, for spectacular light effects on sunny days.
